Climate change is the greatest threat to harp seals as it is causing the sea ice they rely on to melt and disappear. Harp seal pups can drown in melting ice or be crushed by chunks of ice crashing down into the ocean. More than 75% of pups in Canada perished in 2007 due to poor ice conditions. In 2010, almost none survived. Things are now at a critical point in the survival of the harp seal population. The list of threats facing harp seals is endless: entanglement in plastic fishing gear, commercial hunting, vessel strikes, chemical contaminants, oil spills, and energy exploration.
4Ocean introduced the Harp Seal Bracelet to shine a spotlight on these issues and drive positive action on behalf of harp seals. For every Harp Seal Bracelet sold this month, 4Ocean will pull one pound of trash from the ocean, rivers, and coastlines and donate one pound to their partners. The “4O” charm represents the pound of trash you removed from the ocean, rivers, and coastlines, and symbolizes your commitment to 4Ocean’s mission to end the ocean plastic crisis.
